John 1 - a Catholic Version

(CPDV - catholic public domain verison, taken from the Challoner Revision of the Douay-Rheims Bible, completed in 2009 and currently awaiting official catholic church recognition)

1:1. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

1:2. The same was in the beginning with God.

1:3. All things were made by Him, and nothing that was made was made without Him.

1:4. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.

1:5. The light shone in darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

1:6. There was a man sent from God whose name was John.

1:7. This man came as a witness, to give testimony to the light, that all men might believe through him.

1:8. He was not the light, but was to give testimony to the light.

1:9. That was the true light, which enlightens every man that comes into this world. 1:10. He was in the world, and the world was made by Him, and the world did not know Him.

1:11. He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.

1:12. But He gave those who received Him and believed in His name the power to be made the sons of God,

1:13. who are born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

1:14. The Word was made flesh and dwelt among us (and we saw His glory, the glory as it were of the only begotten of the Father), full of grace and truth.

1:15. John bore witness to Him and cried out, "This was He of whom I spoke, 'He that shall come after me is preferred before me, because He was before me.'"

1:16. Of His fullness we all have received, and grace for grace.

1:17. For the law was given by Moses; grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

1:18. No man has seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, who is in the Bosom of the Father, has declared Him.

1:19. This is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to him to ask him, "Who are you?"

1:20. He acknowledged and did not hold back, and he declared, "I am not the Christ."

1:21. They asked him, "What then? Are you Elijah?" He said, "I am not." "Are you the prophet?" He answered, "No."

1:22. Consequently, they said to him, "Who are you, that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?"

1:23. He said, "I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, 'Make straight the way of the Lord,' as the prophet Isaiah said."

1:24. Those who were sent were from the Pharisees.

1:25. They asked him, "Why then do you baptize, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?"

1:26. John answered them, "I baptize with water, but one has stood in the midst of you whom you do not know. This might refer to the time when Jesus was with the elders in the Temple.

1:27. "The same is He that shall come after me, who is preferred before me, the latchet of whose shoe I am not worthy to loose."

1:28. These things were done in Bethany, beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

1:29. The next day, John saw Jesus coming to him, and he said, "Behold the Lamb of God. Behold Him who takes away the sin of the world.

1:30. "This is He of whom I said, 'After me there comes a Man who is preferred before me because He was before me.'

1:31. "I did not know Him, but that He may be made manifest in Israel, I therefore have come baptizing with water."

1:32. John gave testimony, saying, "I saw the Spirit coming down, as a dove from Heaven, and He remained upon Him.

1:33. "I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, 'He upon whom you shall see the Spirit descending and remaining upon Him is He that baptizes with the Holy Spirit.'
1:34. "I have seen, and I have given testimony that this is the Son of God."

1:35. The next day John again stood with two of his disciples.

1:36. Beholding Jesus walking, he said, "Behold the Lamb of God."

1:37. The two disciples heard him speak and they followed Jesus.

1:38. Jesus turning and seeing them following Him, said to them, "What do you seek?" They said to Him, "Rabbi (which means Master), where do You dwell?"

1:39. He said to them, "Come and see." They came and saw where He abode, and they stayed with Him that day. Now it was about the tenth hour after dawn.

1:40. Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who had heard John and followed Jesus.

1:41. He found first his brother Simon and said to him, "We have found the Messiah (meaning the Christ)."

1:42. He brought him to Jesus, and Jesus looking upon him, said, "You are Simon the son of John. You shall be called Cephas (which means Peter)."

1:43. On the following day, He wanted to go into Galilee, and He found Philip. Jesus said to him, "Follow Me."

1:44. Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.

1:45. Philip found Nathanael and said to him, "We have found Him about whom the Prophets and Moses in the Law wrote: Jesus the son of Joseph of Nazareth."

1:46. Nathanael said to him, "Can anything good come from Nazareth?" Philip said to him, "Come and see."

1:47. Jesus saw Nathanael coming to Him and He said about him, "Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no guile."

1:48. Nathanael said to Him, "From where do You know me?" Jesus answered him, "Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you."

1:49. Nathanael answered Him, "Rabbi, You are the Son of God. You are the King of Israel."

1:50. Jesus answered him, "Because I said to you, 'I saw you under the fig tree,' you believe; greater things than these shall you see."

1:51. Jesus said to him, "Amen, amen, I say to you, you shall see heaven opened and the Angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man."
